The “Addressing COVID-19 Vaccine concerns among people who are incarcerated” (ADVANCE) study involved COVID-19 vaccine research among people in Provincial Correctional Centres in British Columbia (BC), Canada.
The main objectives were:
The ADVANCE Study was an integrated knowledge translation project using participatory health research approaches of emergent design. Through this iterative and collaborative process, we co-created strategies to enhance education on and confidence in COVID-19 vaccines specifically for people who experience incarceration.
We conducted a focus group at the very beginning of the study with People Who Have Lived Experience of Incarceration who worked as Peer Health Mentors, supporting people in prison or recently released from prison in BC during the COVID-19 pandemic, to refine the study objectives, methodology and approach. Below is a graphical summary of that focus group, which explains what people in prison were coping with during the COVID-19 pandemic, and how educational approaches should be tailored to the needs and preferences of people who are incarcerated.
Visit the COVID-19 section on the Education Resources page to view or download any of the resources co-developed with people who have lived/living experience of incarceration through the ADVANCE Study.
Contact STBBI_Pathways@bccdc.ca if you work in a BC Provincial Correctional Centre and would like to order printed copies of any of the resources to be sent to the centre.
The News & Stories page include blogs written by team members, news, project updates and past and upcoming events.
