Hepatitis C and STBBI Education for Healthcare Staff in BC Corrections

To support healthcare staff in BC Corrections to provide care to clients for hepatitis C and STBBIs that is in line with the guidelines and recommendations made through the You Matter: Pathways to care for STBBIs project, we have created a suite of courses and educational resources that are aimed at healthcare staff working in BC Corrections or in the community with people who have been released from BC Corrections custody.

These courses and educational resources will support healthcare staff to:

  • Improve your knowledge about hepatitis C and STBBI transmission and prevention
  • Deliver hepatitis C and STBBI testing to clients who are in custody
  • Support treatment and linkage to community care providers and supports for clients in custody affected by hepatitis C or other STBBIs
  1. BCCDC video: Responding to hepatitis C virus and STBBIs in BC Provincial Corrections (for Healthcare Staff)
    • 30-minute long virtual seminar providing basic information about STBBIs in BC correctional facilities, including prevalence, stigma, testing rates, and treatments.
    • Designed for all health care staff (e.g., nurses, doctors, health care admin support) who work in BC correctional facilities.
  2. BCCDC online course: Responding to hepatitis C virus and STBBIs in BC Provincial Corrections (for Healthcare Staff)
      • 60-minute long self-paced online course providing basic information about STBBIs in BC correctional facilities, including prevalence, stigma, testing rates, and treatments.
      • Designed for all health care staff (e.g., nurses, doctors, health care admin support) who work in BC correctional facilities.
  3. BCCDC online course: Hepatitis C for Public Health Providers
    • 180-minute long self-paced course designed for providers in the fields of public health and community health care. If you are brand new to the area of HCV testing and care, the course may take 4 hours to complete.
  4. UBC CPD: Sexually Transmitted and Blood-borne Infections: Barriers to Screening
    • 90-minute long accredited and self-paced course exploring current STBBI trends in Canada, provides an overview of the Public Health Agency of Canada’s guidance on STBBI screening, and offers strategies to reduce barriers and increase access to STBBI screening as part of routine care.
    • Designed for front-line health-care providers such as family physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, public health nurses, midwives and other primary care providers.
  5. eduCATIE hepatitis C & HIV courses for service providers
    • CATIE offers open online courses through eduCATIE.ca to build knowledge of HIV and hepatitis C science.
    • Courses are self-directed and are designed for service providers who prefer to learn on their own time and at their own pace. All participants receive a certificate of completion
  6. INHSU Hepatitis C in Primary Care and Drug and Alcohol Settings Education Program
    • A CME accredited program adapted for Canada by a local expert steering committee and in collaboration with local partners, including CanHepC, CATIE and University Health Network
    • Consists of four open access online modules followed by an interactive workshop facilitated by a local HCV expert to put learning into practice. Online modules include:
      • HCV epidemiology and prevention
      • HCV testing and diagnosis
      • HCV treatment
      • Ongoing monitoring
  7. BCCDC STI Certified Practice Education Program
    • The BCCDC STI Certified Practice Education Program is only available for Registered Nurses in British Columbia and is approved by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) as a certifying education program for registered nurses practicing STI care.
    • Individuals can only enroll with approval from their employer, and those employed by Health Authorities (HA) will need to be nominated by that respective HA. Each HA only has two spaces allocated in each session, therefore there may be a waitlist to enroll in the course.
    • There are 10 sessions run per year, beginning with an 8-week long STI theory course. After completion of the theory course, Nurses have 3 months to complete the STI clinical practice requirements (3 days or 18 hours with a BCCDC Provincial STI Clinic preceptor or a community BCCDC-approved preceptor).
