ABOUT US
In partnership between British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), British Columbia Mental Health and Substance Use Services (BCMHSUS), University of British Columbia (UBC) and other stakeholders, we created a collaboration to work on transformative projects to improve outcomes related to infectious diseases such as Sexually Transmitted and Blood-Borne Infections (STBBIs) and COVID-19 for people with lived and living experience of incarceration (PWLLE-I).
A key value of our projects is to ensure core work is relevant to key stakeholders by engaging them across project timelines. Key stakeholders include, but are not limited to, PWLLE-I, Indigenous peoples, members from LGBTQ2+ communities, health care workers who work in prisons, corrections officers, and experts in serving/engaging/researching with key populations.
Values
Values embedded in the work of our projects include engaging partners and producing outputs that align with:
- Trauma-informed care
- Cultural safety
- Harm reduction
- Addressing stigma & social determinants of health
- Person-centered health care that respects individuals, their choices, and their concerns
- The importance of engagement in care to mitigate morbidity and mortality for STBBIs and other health issues
- Evidence/fact-based sources
- Intersectionality
Land Acknowledgement
We acknowledge that this work is carried out on the Traditional, Unceded, Ancestral, & Continually Occupied territories of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and sel̓íl̓witulh (Tsleil-waututh) Nations. We thank the First Peoples of Turtle Island for their continued care and stewardship of these lands since time immemorial. We recognise that settler colonialism has caused irreparable harms to the First Peoples of this land, including through the colonial criminal justice system, in which Indigenous people are incarcerated at a rate up to 50 times higher than non-Indigenous people in Canada.
